“Ayla, Ayla, please. Tell them it’s ok. I don’t need to go to jail.” The desperation in Blaze’s voice was intense.

“Wait, officer. Please, one moment.” The officer stopped dragging Blaze to his car. Ayla marched over in front of him. Her face was hard and she looked far from the sympathetic friend he needed her to be right now. “What happened to my cat?”

“I told you. He was gone when I got there. He must have… gotten out.”

“I checked all the windows and doors before I got on that flight. Twice.” She held up a fist as a sort of weak threat. “What happened to him?”

Could he tell her? Would it get him out of this mess? “Ayla, I need you to tell them to let me go. I can explain.”

“Explain why you were in my house without my permission?”

“I take care of your house.”

“While I was gone. But you snuck in while I was at home. In the shower. How can I trust you after that?”

“It was a mistake?”

“And this time? Was that a mistake? You were stealing my stuff. And where did you get another key?”

“I had one… Ayla, please tell them to let me go. We can talk about this.”

“What happened to my cat?”

It wouldn’t help if he told her.

“Rot in jail.”
